Math Department

Compton High School offers a variety of Mathematics course that would prepare student not just to fulfill the graduation and "a-g" requirements but would equip them to use their mathematical skills and ability to real life situation. The department aims to provide students with knowledge and understanding of the mathematics necessary to function in a world very dependent upon the application of mathematics. Furthermore, students with deficit skills will be reinforced through explicit intervention that would close the gap and better prepare them for grade level courses.

Instructionally, this goal translates into three components: (1) conceptual understanding, (2) skills or procedural fluency and (3) problem solving. Individually, each of these components is necessary but not sufficient for a student to be mathematically proficient.  They are not, however, independent of each other.  They integrally related, need to be taught simultaneously, and should be a component of every lesson.

We believe that a mathematically proficient students are students who:

1. Understand the concepts of and become proficient with the skills of mathematics;
2. Communicate and reason mathematically;
3. Become problem solvers by using appropriate tools and strategies.
